Welgevonden Game Reserve
•The RI.Perspective
Set within the vast landscapes of the Welgevonden Game Reserve, inside South Africa’s UNESCO-recognised Waterberg Biosphere, Kaofela Retreats places physical practice in direct relationship with the surrounding landscape. Here, movement exists alongside the rhythm of the bush: sunrise game drives replace alarm clocks, open horizons become training grounds, and recovery, nature and ritual become part of the same daily rhythm.
Founded by head coach Steffi, whose approach has been shaped between Cape Town and London, Kaofela Retreats brings together Reformer Pilates, Mat Pilates, strength training, and immersive safari experiences within the private setting of Tintswalo Waterberg. Alongside Pilates instructor and sports massage therapist Paul, and strength and conditioning coach Emmanuel, the retreat creates an experience that feels both grounding and transformative.
Days unfold slowly and intentionally. Early morning movement sessions overlook untouched wilderness, while the sounds of birdsong, distant wildlife, and shifting wind replace the noise of daily routine. There is intensity here, but not urgency. Training becomes less about performance and more about presence.
The name Kaofela, meaning “all of us” in Sesotho, reflects the retreat’s philosophy of shared experience and connection. Guests gather around long-table meals prepared by private chefs, return from game drives with stories still unfolding, and rediscover movement in a way that feels expansive rather than controlled.
Far from the polished predictability of traditional wellness spaces, Kaofela Retreats offers something quieter and more elemental: a return to rhythm, to nature, and to the experience of moving well within a wild landscape.
